They actually come with a silicone cover that goes over the egg - allowing you to crack the shell of a hard boiled egg with out burning your fingers. Is it practical - maybe not so much. BUT makes a very cute presentation!

I used plain white egg cups to hold brownies for dessert but you could also use them to hold chocolate wrapped eggs.

Cheers! Where did the time go? It is uncharacteristically warm here in Fredericton (NB). I have no snow to speak of on my front lawn - eery..... usually we can expect a winter storm on St. Patty Day but I highly doubt it this year - double digits I suspect (not psychic - but watch the weather channel)

So, does this mean we are now experiencing the luck of the Irish? I don't know but I'm going to give you a few tips to make your party a bit more special with very budget wise ideas. Gotta luv the budget!

1. Send out an evite (www.evite.com) to all your guests inviting them to your fabulous last minute party. Hey-last minute can be fun especially for those who have children and didn't plan on going anywhere (yep - referring to me! we love St. Pat's at home & WHO wants to stand out in a line all night anyway!)

a sneak peak into my private life with the little man, wearing our 'mommy made' T-shirts....

Use creative language on the invites to make them more festive like:

a bit of malarkey
and lots of green beer
make no mistake
you'll want to be here

2. Play with colour - obviously I mean green! Decorations, Drinks, Food
Easy to do decorations:

pick up some glow bracelets from the dollar store and transform them by using them as napkin rings - twist and slip - oh so simple! Spear the fruit. If using floral picks they have wire on one end which you can use to secure the speared fruit to another object (grape vine, oasis foam, etc)
2. Brush the fruit with a thin layer of egg white (paint brush or basting brush works well)
3. Lightly sprinkle the sugar over the fruit using your fingers (don't roll the fruit in the sugar - big mess!) The first bit of sugar will dissolve into the egg whites but keep sprinkling until it starts to look white. Extra sugar in a few spots will give it a pretty frosty like look.
4. Let dry about 30min (laying on wax paper)

For those of you wishing to use fruit at your next event, I hope you found this inspirational. Funny individually I can see how the pair would be a 'sure fit' for the Hollywood night of glitz and glamour - wait can those 2 words be used in the same sentence as Steve & Alec???
This disappointment added to the fact that again I did not see Cojo on the red carpet, was a true sore spot with me. The reason we at home watch this awards 'stuff' is so that we can see the dresses - really do we care who wins best such and such? The red carpet is now reduced to a mere, hey how are you, let me talk about why I like you and then an actual tap saying oh no, you are done talking (which they didn't even talk anyway) and need to move on to the the inside. - Thanks Sherri! Worst interviewer of the red carpet - EVER!!!! please go back and stay at the view...
So having seen the red carpet and some of the dresses and then seeing the awards and those presenting I have made my list of best and worst dressed:
First I have to say, did you check out he dress that won for most votes? It's the one that the ladies handing out the actual Oscars were wearing. Yep, I voted for that one - beautiful.
So to the nitty gritty of it:
Best dressed top picks were:
Elizabeth Banks, Sandra Bullock (oh, and she won!), Meryl Streep, Demi Moore

Worst dressed - and there were many (Deborah Ann Woll- what were you thinking!) so I chose the most surprising ones for my list:
Sarah Jessica Parker - Carrie Bradshaw would be so upset but not sure with what more the hair or the dress!
Charlize Theron - what was up with the Vera Wang design with the bulls-eye on here breasts! Seriously that is all you could look at!
J.Lo - the trend was to be 'architecture' in dresses and this one certainly had it but it also accentuated all her curves in all the wrong ways.

Weather you agree or not I'd love to hear from you on your picks!

Cheers!

Oscar Buzz

How do you plan on celebrating this weekend?
What am I talking about - the Academy Awards of course!

The red carpet walk and interviews are my favorite. The dresses and the hair, remember Cojo? I loved him and I don't get to see him as often as I would like. I always look forward to his picks of the best & worst dressed. Do these people not have stylists? Seriously!? I question the loyalty of them if they do - friends, well, some friends and hey, I don't need to be your friend but I'll tell you if what you are wearing should be tossed out in the compost. I could always be hired to dress you celebs (if you're reading) - I'm quite reasonable.

Here's Cojo's picks for the Golden Globes just to remember how good he is!

Can you figure out his best & worst from the above without looking? Every time we head over to a particular girlfriend's place we know we will be served Sangria. It's different every time but very good! She may be a mixologist at heart! A signature drink at any type of party is always great; it cuts down on the bar cost of having to have everything from gin to dark rum and various liqueurs. This way you can just have the ingredients for the one beverage and a few non-alcoholic choices as well. (I like saving money.)

Signature drinks don't even need to be something completely new and complex. Taking a favorite, say a mojito, is a classic drink that most will enjoy and simple to make. You can even play with colours of other drinks by simply adding food colouring to make your mark.

Options are truly endless! Have fun and mix it up!

Over theTop Proposals

Well, it's February and LOVE is in the air with Valentine's Day approaching - only one day away! (OMG! I can't believe how the time has gone already this year!)

My thoughts have turned to love, engagements, proposals and with proposals, as an event planner, I tend to think about the opportunities available for 'over-the-top' proposals. There are many great restaurants which can set the stage for an amazing proposal but this has now become the norm.

A great marriage proposal includes 3 elements:
1. The setting
With the setting - it should be so that the question is not anticipated. Think outside of locations that are give-aways like the spot where you first kissed, etc. Instead think locations that are fun - eluding to the life you will have ahead of you. Think about dates and timing, on average, most proposals are in the evening on a special date. Create your own date - seriously thing out side the box. (This is something as an event planner I can help you with.)
2. The question
The question should be more than just 'will you marry me'. Romantic speeches are common based on love and commitment; however you can play it up many ways using word plays, poems, and even comic relief. A reference to future anniversaries or aspects of marriages could be used.
3. The ring
Once the ring is unveiled - it is the center of attention. An unconventional ring will bring more attention but a simple ring can bring in the nods by simply playing with how it is presented. Play with how you give it - just remember if you include it in a drink or food - be careful that she doesn't swallow it!

Often I'm approached with questions as to how to make a proposal more than spectacular. The answer really does depend on the couple and the soon to be bride's personality. Not all couples or women will appreciate a public proposal as they would prefer to have it in a quieter setting, a more intimate affair. That said, if you are thinking about a more extreme event then you probably have already considered the opposing factors. One being - will she say yes? With more extreme measures normally a crowd is involved and then there is also pressure as to feeling the need to answer right away.

This year I came across a wonderful company in PEI.....

The BeeKeeper aka 'Chase Crews' is who you should look up - www.aboveandbeeyond.com . For $225 they will take you and your honey up in their hot air balloon for a ride overlooking PEI. I bet there won't be many people who have done that! (Drop me a line to tell me about it if you have.)

If that doesn't get your juices flying, there is a high school in the US that gives creative asking a whole new look and that's just for the prom! The point being if high-schoolers can come up with outlandish ways to ask a date to the prom certainly you can spend a bit of time thinking of how to ask the woman of your life to marry you.

Cheers!

A Perfect Time for Weddings - Fredericton Bridal Show

This past Sunday I attended and was part of Fredericton's largest and longest running bridal show.

For a bit of history - this was a big deal.

This show is organized by Nancy Curtis from Perfect Parties by Nancy who is probably the original party planner in this area. We are in essence direct competition. Well, I've been asking to be part of her show for 2 years now and finally, finally, this year I was sent an invitation to participate!!!!!!

Persistence is key. This is also known as "networking" which I am getting better at. lol

So needless to say I was super pumped to be part of this show and uber nervous. (I may not appear to be the person that gets nervous but I do) I was so nervous due to the fact that Fredericton is where I live. These are in fact brides I could potentially see every day around town. What if they didn't like me? What if my booth wasn't up to snuff? I talked to a few great friends and managed to shove these insecure feelings back into the box they should remain in; designed my booth layout; put on my best frock <read dress="" cocktail="" black="">and called a friend who occasionally pulls through as my assistant. (must have been using my foresight powers here as I had the most severe migraine on the actual day of the show - thank god for friends and over abundant supplies of over the counter drugs!)</read>

<read dress="" cocktail="" black="">Below are some photos of my booth, which I was surprised to discover was not a 10x10 space. However, I am a great 'work with what I got' wedding planner and transformed the space given including everything I needed and did not impede traffic flow by the booth. That's how I roll - lol!</read>

I was so glad that I used the black backdrop as it put me above the crowds - visually and literally - you could see my signs above the heads of everyone as you entered into the room.
The second photo is a close up of the flowers that were in my booth - a bit wild and funky which could easily be used in any garden theme wedding.

The photo on the left is the table that was set up with the guest book and my portfolio. On this table is also a green orchid pomander (fake) beside a tall tower vase - coloured pink here to tie everything together and to demonstrate simple yet effective options.
The photo on the right has a box of grass which could be used for a variety of reasons: hold escort cards, table numbers, insert votive candle holders, add flowers, options are endless! There is a floral print invitation (City Boy Meets Country Girl) behind the box and a favor pocket in front which contains seeds (very green). Again seen here is the orchid pomander, this time with a pink ribbon but placed on top of the tower vase - double duty!

FYI - Vases rent for $5 each

<read dress="" cocktail="" black="">
</read>

Heavenly Gowns Bridal Show

This past weekend I attended the Heavenly Gowns Bridal show in Saint John. As usual Sheri (owner of Heavenly Gowns) put on a lovely show and I have to admit that she even stepped up her game on the layout of the show and it was even more attractively positioned than last year when I attended.

Bridal shows are a great time for vendors as they draw in your exact target market - BRIDES! It is a great chance to meet new brides and talk with them about what you offer. However, it's not all about the brides (sorry!) it is also a great networking opportunity for the vendors themselves where we can meet new and catch up with old friends. I had the pleasure of doing both this year.
I was glad that the Hilton had a booth this year and they even teamed up with a decorator so needless to say their booth looked amazing!
again I'm not a photographer nor do i pretend to be...well maybe on girl or family weekends!

SO, check out the glowing orb in the back of this booth (next to the chocolate fountain - did I mention that the entire show smelled of chocolate!) This 'orb' for lack of a better term is beautiful! And they are for RENT!!! Simply contact Wendi at Spurs in Brunswick Square. Also, I should mention in this booth way up (which you can't see in this photo) are chandeliers - six of them - which they hung that morning.
The Hilton now has these lovely cocktail tables and barstools. They even have the white scuba chair covers and I've been told they are even looking at getting their own sashes (white). Hmmm...almost sounds like they are full service hotel - lol!

I also met Danielle from Danielle's Desserts and she rents her cakes (photo below)- that's right for all you brides who don't want a cake but want the look at the reception, you can RENT one. She even has cookies that can be used as favours (they are as large as my hand btw.)

My booth was sandwiched in between 2 vendors. On one side was "1st Choice Catering"(who also had 2 chocolate fountains!) - Russel and Michelle are very nice and he knows a lot about food. On the other side was my friend Sarah's Sweet Delights (shown above with Eric representing) whom I might add also brought her delicious chocolate truffles. (I KNOW! I ALMOST DIED WITH ALL THE CHOCOLATE SMELLS!)

I ran into one of my favorite floral designers Beth (she is uber sweet!) from Creative Designs By Beth. I want you to be prepared!

10 Tips for Attending Bridal Shows
1. Get a list of the shows in your area (Check - I just gave it to you) We are really getting off to a good start!
2. Pre-printed labels. Easy to do on your home computer. Have them with your address, email, phone and don't forget your wedding date! Some vendors will be "qualifying" you - this means that they are looking for your date and checking to see if they are available. (I'm booked for August 7th and can't take another client) Saves time (see #9)
3. Register for a free email account and have all wedding related emails go to that. Easy to stop unwanted emails after the wedding :)
4. Be prepared. Dress appropriately - wear comfortable shoes, it will be a long day for standing and walking around. Bring a bottle of water. Have a bag with handles for all the literature (see #8) or a large purse.
5. Bring a friend. Take someone from your bridal party who's opinion you want. Yes, you can even take your finance.
6. Bring swatches of your colours. This helps bakers, florists, planners and others make suggestions as to what they can do for you with out generalizing.
7. Be prepared to book. Or make follow-up appointments within 24-48 hours. This is really important with vendors who's services are limitted to only one-of's.
8. Take as much literature as possible & take notes. When you get home this will be all that you have - your notes will be what sets "your" vendors apart from the others.
9. Don't waste your time. If you don't need it, don't check it out. If you have a hall or ballroom booked you won't need another one. If you have a dress, chances are that you won't buy another one - use the time during the fashion show to go back and talk to vendors you were interested in. I'm always at my booth during the fashion show <wink,>
10. Enjoy the experience!

I hope this has been helpful. If you have other suggestions that would make things easier please send them to me.

Cheers! & Happy Planning

Wedding Trends for 2010

With the start of a new year and decade, CSJEvents has decided to produce a newsletter. The first issue went out a few days ago. In this issue I listed, in bullet form, top trends I see coming for 2010 in weddings. I've received a few emails asking me about these so I'd like to take this time to clarify "why"......

W-Trends for 2010
1. Continuance of blues (every shade) along with grays as dominate colours - monochromatic schemes are on the rise.
why: Blues are serene, depicts water, relaxing. Gray is the new neutral with a sophisticated edge.

This photo is an 'inspiration board' from "Here Comes the Blog - Wedding Ideas for Brides"

2. Breaking of all the 'traditional' rules
why: Simply because the girl getting married today is not the same girl getting married 20 years ago. We don't do things simply because they've 'always been done' and when we do, they typically have an individual flare to them. No one would have dreamed of having black dresses in their wedding party 10 years ago or walking down the asile in a pink wedding gown.

Vera Wang 2010 - Dovima, long asymetric pale pink organza dress with bows on shoulder and waist

3. Outrageous colour combinations; a dominate colour with a surprising accent
why: With monochromatic colour themes it is very easy to add that visual interest with a surprising accent (feathers, crystals, trees, etc.). Paint companies have named their "hot" colours for the year and generally (whether subconscious or not) they tend to show up in weddings. This year you will see - oranges, turquious and bright yellow as well as combinations of these. Very tropical.

4. Monograms; simple to elaborate and on everything
why: Brides and Grooms want to touch every aspect of their day. This is their stamp. expect it to be on everything from the invitations to the walls & dance floor.

5. Focus on more personal & detailed touches
why: Couples are more thoughtful on making guests feel welcomed and want to ensure they enjoy their time. This will be seen in the form of welcome baskets, weekend affairs and take home favours. Focus will be on the DIY more than ever but expect the budget to be increased.

6. Groom style: grooms will be more involved and will add their special touch in forms from converse sneakers to fedoras, etc.
why: The groom of today wants to be involved. No longer are they on the sidelines letting the bride take charge. They want the wedding to be equally theirs and to see their own personality shine through.

So I simply had to post these photos from my cousin's wedding this past November. This is completely their individual style.

7. Smaller guest counts lending to more elaborate "parties" at unique venues.

why:With a smaller guest count you open up options of other venues for your reception other than the traditional hall or hotel ballroom. You can look at galleries, back yards, clubs and even museums.

8. Mini-destination weddings: staying home but yet opting for another city.
why: With the economy the way it is, those with money are choosing to spend it inconspictiously so an extravent affair scheduled to be away is now scaled back to a more local destination which will still have the same feel and features. The destination wedding will ever popular remain but guests will get out of town by car (within driving distance) so couples can create a weekend affair, guests get an escape an no one breaks the bank.
example: I have a current client who lives in Fredericton and we are planning her wedding in St. Andrews. FUN!

9. Landscape centerpieces

why: First it started as monochromatic and then developed into multiple clusters of different flowers. With the focus now more than ever on green practices and getting the 'largest bang for your buck' landscapes are emerging. They last longer and are a real focal point. You can use fewer of them as they are typically larger - 1 on every other table.

Expect the price point on these to be higher. The impact is undeniable!

10. Shorter wedding dresses
why: Shorter dresses lend themselves to more feminine details.Shoes are getting bolder and we have a variety to choose from. Pairing a super short dress with some ankel tied sandles shows off your individual flair. Think flirty 30's.

Passionate and dedicated

A few weeks back I was asked by Laverne Stewart to come into the Daily Gleaner to be interviewed for a piece she was working on. Of course I went.
I was a bit nervous as I new the piece was going to be of a more personal nature and I'm always leery with telling people everything about me. What if I forgot something? No one really knows how individuals can perceive you and well 'print' can be immortalized. I spent maybe over an hour there talking to Laverne that day, I cried, I laughed and I remembered. She was a pure delight. At the end of our time, she asked me for individuals with whom she could speak with. (???) Ok, so of course my husband (I've always wondered what he really thought about everything), a new and old friend (Jan & Samantha - I knew where they could be reached without hesitation). I'm sorry to say that she didn't have a chance to speak to my sister but over all I was quite pleased with the article. (Who am I kidding? - It was perfect!)
So today, one of the worst snow storms may be hitting us now and I ventured out to get the paper (of course after posting it multiple times on various social media outlets). I bought 5....lol
I was standing in line with them and noticed that I was actually looking at myself - ON THE FRONT PAGE! Here I was at the top of the front page in the banner - playing my guitar no less! Now I should state that I am only learning to play. The photo shocked me as it had been taken earlier in the summer when I was interviewed for Last Summer Parties which was printed around Labour Day. This is the original photo....

I personally liked that they clipped me out from my ugly purple chair....Someday it will get recovered...someday.....

One of the best things that has happened (so far today) from this article was that I received an email from an old employer who had just read the article (not sure how he got the email - google?). I almost fell over I was so shocked. I was surprised but really glad that he took the time to reach out.

I'm trying to determine what I'll send Mrs. Stewart on Monday for such an amazing article.... I know what I'm sending my sister - an autographed version of the paper! lol

Newsletter

With the newness of 2010 upon us and feeling renewed vigor I've started a newsletter. Prior to that March 25th or the vernal equinox was celebrated as the New Year’s Day. This went against tradition as each “new year” was celebrated around an agricultural event – a harvest or the ripening of corn, the blooming of the orange trees, etc. Blah, blah, blah – anyone who knows me knows that I’m not into history.

Symbolically the New Year signifies the ‘renewal of life’ and with this comes the never ending “resolutions”, the cleaning of the slate or the promise of a better life. However, resolutions have acquired a bad reputation – how could they not, the majority of resolutions made fail. I too, have announced New Year’s Resolutions that went undoubtedly into the bin of forgotten proclamations.

Over the last few years I have been more thoughtful in my resolutions. In 2006, I was going to be more organized (could that even be possible? lol). Well, one needs to start out with a ‘resolution’ that can be attainable! With the approach of 2007, I proclaimed I wanted a larger family and in October our first son was born. For 2008, I announced that I would enjoy life more and do something I loved (CSJEvents). For 2009, I resolved to become debt free. I got a part-time job along with keeping my full-time job and the entrepreneurial endeavors I also had (I know, I’m a bit crazy – read more about me in this Saturday’s issue of ‘Balance’ in The Daily Gleaner). Success is emanate - I have only but 2 outstanding debts which are reasonable and manageable.

A search of the internet on the top New Year’s resolutions left me with:
1. Spend more time with family and friends
2. Fit in fitness
3. Quit smoking
4. Get out of debt
5. Get organized

If none of these resolutions grab your interest or are the same ones you’ve already tried in years past, why not try something new and individual like:
1. Conquer a fear
2. Step outside of your comfort zone – professionally and personally
3. Learn something new and/or practical
for women – learn to change a tire or the headlight in your car
for men – build a shelf, develop or re-visit a hobby

No matter what your New Year’s Resolution is following these 6 easy tips can help ensure this year doesn’t get wasted:
1. I then wrapped the gifts and tied them with a great ribbon (which I also had in my supply stocks) and then used an assortment of hand-made (not by me) ornaments as the tags.

After wrapping only a few gifts my hands were indeed 'dirty' with newsprint. My son was quite intrigued - he's 2 and not allowed to touch anything with dirty hands...lol. With Christmas right around the corner (OMG! 2 sleeps) it seems like a good time to talk about the last minute shopping that we know exists.
As a planner and organizer myself, most are shocked to learn that I love last minute shopping. I even leave some of my important gifts until then (so, if you haven't got your gift yet....it's cause i haven't bought it yet - silly!) The air of the mall this time of year with all the holiday shoppers can be daunting if you are not prepared so I've made a few lists that may help lessen the stress and even make it fun perhaps.

5 Tips for making last-minute holiday shopping less stressful
1. Set a budget for each person prior to going out
2. Make a list of gifts needed or people you need to buy for
3. Know where to look for the gifts: do your recon-work (this can also be worked into 'ways to make last minute shopping fun')
4. Be prepared to not get your top gift pick (let's face it others have already been there and you aren't the only one who thought it would make a great gift for so-and-so)
5. Don't despair! If you really can't find that great gift for "x" make them a really great IOU with the promise of something spectacular. Be careful with this one though - you don't want to be remembered for giving a 'gift' and failing to deliver on it.

Ways to make last minute shopping fun:
1. Make an evening of it - be prepared for long lines and short tempers
2. Split the gift list (make a race of it)
3. Reward yourself with that "venti mocha peppermint late" if you get everything on your list done.

Top 8 Easy Gifts that Don’t Suck (in my opinion):
1. Liquor Store Gift Cards: alcohol purchases can become pretty significant with Christmas and New Years so close together.
2. Spa Services: great gift for moms (new and old) as they typically wouldn’t splurge now on this. Receiving it for free on the other hand is a luxury not many would turn down
3. Gift Cards: previously looked upon as a ‘cop-out’. However, now everyone from the drugstore to the electronics store to the coffee shop offers them and hey – you did at least figure out what store to get the gift at – right?
4. Tickets: concert/show/sporting event, remember to get 2.
5. Getaway: evening or weekend. Great gift for the ‘hard to buy for’ person or the person ‘who has everything’. Everyone loves to relax.
6. Subscriptions: magazines/paper. If you know someone who loves cooking get them “Cook’s Illustrated”. You can buy the current issue and wrap it up with the promise of 12, 6, or 4 more coming.
7. Charity: (remember it’s my opinion here) a donation in the name of someone to their favourite charity is nice. Makes a great gift for those ‘who have everything’. Environmentally friendly? Save a piece of the rain forest for them.
8. Give the Gift of Yourself: (hehehe) very budget friendly. Make up coupons for services you can provide in the weeks to come. A 4 course meal, babysitting services, pet-care services, website building, car repairs, and painting – the list is endless. Word of Caution: Don’t over promise or you will be remembered as giving a gift but ‘failing’ to deliver on it.

When all else fails by chocolate!

Holiday decorating tips

So, I'm a bit behind in the blogging....

I have had the great opportunity to be on the radio each week this month (News91.9) and I've had a lot of fun. This past week (16th) we talked about holiday decorating:

5 great budget extenders for holiday decorating:
1. hold a 'last year's' decoration swap with neighbours or friends to change it up. This can be really fun provided you have people who's taste you like :)
2. throw a party organized around decorating to minimize the work. (This would also work for baking) This is great event for bringing together extended families who live close together and including those friends who may not have family close to be involved in something festive.
3. Organize family craft night for making decorations. This could range from cut-out decorations to candy dish centrepieces.
4. Use the outdoors as inspiration - add twigs and evergreens. This will also be very 'green' and minimal effort provided you have some in the back yard. You may need to be willing to go for a chilly walk.
5. When you have a dinner party it would be easy to take a simple Christmas bulb and tie a ribbon on it with a name tag to use as place cards. Each guest could then take them home. This could also be swapped with individual goodie bags at each place setting.

We also touched upon some tips for holiday decorating in general:

1. Edit the room first by removing all those items that aren't necessary.
Why? if you don't edit, after you remove the christmas decorations the room will look empty if you don't have things to move back in.
2. Seperate your "Christmas" and "winter" decorations.

3. Decide on which decorations you will use (this year) Use a colour scheme and let it flow thorough the entire house.

4. Extend decorations into non-traditional rooms such as the bathroom. This will help to tie the entire house together. It also adds a great mood lift as guest see decorations all around.

As some of you know I was also on Live at 5. It was a great experience and some got to glimpse my tree (which is never decorated the same).

Update: So as promised - here is a photo of my tree. I'm not computer savy so I don't know how to add a poll yet but during our radio show when Dan announced that I would be on Live at 5 we opened it up for people to judge my tree. Like or Dislike.
Lets have at it!

Holiday Office Parties - Etiquette

I had the opportunity on Wednesday to be on News91.9 in Moncton. I talked with Dan about etiquette when it comes to holiday parties - specifically the 'work' party.
May people have different views on what the office party should and should not be but, polls and surveys rule, in that those employees who act 'inappropriate' at these holiday parties are negatively affected in terms of career growth.
WOW! Makes you think about this party thing in a more serious light.
With this in mind I have a few tips to make your party appearance a good one:
1. You must attend. This is one of those moments where you need to think about your decision carefully. Your employer is hosting a gathering in which you are expected to go, this function although tied up in the ribbon of "social context" is in fact a business function. This should be treated the same as any other work related event - you show up because it is expected. Trust me when I say that managers notice if you attend.
2.Dress appropriately. Leave the bar clubbing attire at home. This is not the occasion to don on the super glitzy, mid thigh (well really closer to top of the thigh) dress. Yes this one is for the ladies more so than the men as - well - they have it a bit easier in that they wear pant - all the time. :)
3. Drink in moderation. That's right, as un-festive as that may be to some, it is again a work function where all those in the ranks above you will be attending and they will notice if you've had to much to drink.
4. Network & Schmooze. Even if it is outside of your comfort zone try to talk to those people who are in those "higher ranks". Let them notice you (outside) of the traditional workplace. This is in fact one of the main reasons that companies have this type of function - to encourage socializing with other professionals within the company. You may discover someone in another department who knows or has the skills that you are looking for. Break your self-imposed boundaries and mingle outside of the group that you see on a daily basis.
5. Don't complain or monopolize the conversation. Really?! Do I have to state the obvious of this one - no one wants to hear it. Especially be careful if you insist on complaining as there are ears every where. Do you really want the host (your employer) to know that you only came for the booze and food and that you can't even tolerate those you work with - probably not.

Update:
Really funny as I'm finishing this post I have Global News in the background and there is a holiday segment running on 'etiquette at the office party' :)
Oddly enough I feel that I have heard this interview before - did they hear me on Wednesday? :)

Toronto Designs

So, I'm in Toronto and I've finally finished my class on Floral design and wedding decor that i was super excited to do. I got to meet some pretty amazing people yesterday including the instructors:
Shelley DeSilva from Wedding Wows Toronto
Sherisse Bhimani from The Wedding Deocrators
(photos to come - I need to download them and apparently I didn't pack my camera chord.)

I was amazed by the number of people that flew in to take this course! There were 2 from Newfoundland, myself from New Brunswick, Texas, Georgia, Maryland. There was even one who came from the UK! It was a very good experience and I'm sure to be making posts now on all the arrangements I'll be 'practicing' with.

Stay tuned for photos of my holiday arrangements.

Cheers!

Winter Weddings - Inspiration of light

I'm heading to Toronto in a few days for a class on Floral Design and Decor - super excited!
Why do I mention this do you ask? Lately I've been experimenting, practicing, etc. with my own floral designs. A bit unconventional but nice and elegant if I do say so myself.
First, I should give you some background: I was given this particular votive holder a long time back (4 years?) and have never used it. It still contains the original votive that was given to me then. It's not that I didn't like it, it just didn't really go with my decor at the time. Okay I didn't really like it but yet still couldn't part with it, somehow knowing that it would be of use and fulfill its destiny someday.
This happened 2 weeks ago! We were sitting here and the power went out. Now this has of course happened before in the 4 year period that I have owned this candle holder but for some reason I dug it out that night and lit it. BEAUTIFUL! It looked like snow falling in a almost night sky. The holder is teal with these white flecks in it and with the light flickering it made it appear as though snow was falling in this little container. From here I was in love with this little holder and was fully able to appreciate its beauty.
This night I was inspired to design a winter wedding (not Christmas as it is only one month of our long winter here in NB) base around this candle holder and the feeling that I had. I would be using this in the Wedding Show I would be attending.
I wanted to explore the idea of a glowing centerpiece.... but to also include the blue of this holder that was so intriguing. I designed a centerpiece around this idea using a square glass vase and inserting a cylindrical candle holder inside it. I then used floral foam to fill the gaps where I'd be placing flowers but left a space between the foam and the walls of the vase. I chose to use white carnations as my flowers for the centerpiece (many reasons why) which I inserted into the foam around the votive holder, I made sure to cut them short so that they would just be brushing the top of the vase. I then filled in the space I had left using the glass beads that we all know (never really liked them before but for this purpose they were the right thing). I of course chose ones in a teal colour. Once the candle was lit inside the arrangement it looked like it was glowing under the snow (the carnations), the glass rocks sparkled as the light bounced around and the overall effect was what I was trying to achieve.

Now the pictures don't do it justice but then again I'm not a photographer....

So in the above photo you can also see the tiny bouquet I made, again using white carnations , feathers (soft like snowflakes) and crystals. Received may compliments on the pairings - most were "...who knew carnations could look so beautiful!" I did!

I also thought about other lighting that would be needed at this imagined wedding. For this I was inspired to use wooden twigs which were lightly coated with white spray paint. I inserted them into these very tall white vases I have and hung hand-made luminaries from the branches. These luminaries were easy to make and I used pale coloured paper and I punched out a snowflake on 2 sides of each. They were lit using 'battery' tea lights - no fires!
Although I only had one of these at my booth I imagined them strategically placed in the room. Creating lighting and adding to the overall mood.
<img style="cursor: pointer; I'd also like to give credit to my "CSJ" signage in front - thanks sis!

</yeah><img style="cursor: pointer; I was then lucky enough to be asked for my opinion on the economy and weather it has effected myself personally. I was then asked to be on a couple different radio stations (Fred FM 92.3 and News 91.9) however, I think the best pat of this so far was that I was interviewed for the 'live it' section of The Daily Gleaner on summer parties....oh I had fun with that one. I think though I was most happy to see that the picture they chose to run with was of my little angel - Tristan.
He started a new daycare the Tuesday after the story ran and the place actually commented on the article since his picture was in it :) <glowing> I like to joke now that 'I'm mildly famous....' but on the serious side....Mark Taylor at Delora Media has been very helpful. You can check out his company at: www.deloramedia.com
6 'publicity' options taken in 6 months - let's keep the ball rolling!
Cheers!

creativity spike

It's late here and I'm baking a cake for my uncle's 50th birthday. I can't sleep due to the number of incredibly awesome ideas I have running through my mind for wedding ceremonies and receptions.
Although I am happily married (I love you Brannen - as he lays snoring on the couch!) I could get married 100+ different ways.
I don't think that I'm conventional or traditional but an excellent blend of each. I like to take more traditional elements and intersperse some more creative "highlights" that get noticed. Having worked with every type of budget ($2000 - $30K) I definitely find ways to incorporate elements that keep your guests talking about your day long after it's over.
I don't like to do the 'same wedding' over and over but if that's really what you want then of course I'll be happy to comply. With my clients I really try to find out what is unique about them and what they like.

Sooo...enough rambling. Currently I have been investigating outdoor ceremonies and the like. I came across this photo from 'Green Orchid Events' blog.

Living in New Brunswick I'm not sure if anyone has ever done this set-up here but with all our beautiful senic locations this is sure to be a great layout for everyone. All the guests get a great spot to view the ceremony. Those taking photos will have numerous angles to choose from! One guest may be looking at you as you say 'I will' and able to capture the shot as at the same time someone else has captured his expression of hearing you say those 2 little words.
The options are actually endless of ways that you could tweak this to fit your individual style and location.
The key here is that everything must be thought of and planned right down to the recessional and which direction you will walk out from....

Hope this was helpful to some.
Cheers!

How important is the dress? - UPDATE

Well, i just wanted to let you all know that i was looking at some wedding photos of friends the other day and actually did a double take!
I was looking at a photo of my wedding dress and it wasn't me wearing it!
I actually, no word of a lie, had to go check the closet to see if it was still in there. It of course was. So this dress i was looking at wasn't 'exactly' the same dress but honestly you could have fooled me and obviously did.
This makes me pose the question once again as to how important is the dress?
This bride was across Canada - almost to the complete opposite side, which make me wonder - could I have sold my beautiful (now just collecting dust and taking up that much need closet space) dress to this bride? Would she have bought a previously used dress even if was only wore once? I don't know if she would have but I do know that I would have sold it.

Just think you could buy or sell a beautiful gown and then get a photo of that bride so instead of the "travelling pants" it could be the dress that goes on to give each bride a different memory.
Maybe that's cheesy but a thought nonetheless.......

How important is the dress?

So...girls, how important is finding that perfect dress?
Will you break the bank for it? Will you buy used or does it need to be new?

These are all great questions and the answers all come down to you - the bride - and your personality.
Now for the guys, this is the dreaded subject. They generally want you to be happy and to be 'in love' with your gown, as it probably reflects the love you have for him (they like to think - as the diamond is his love for you right?!); however, they often get concerned when you say its X$. Afterall they are going to look quite daper in their tux or suit and it probably only cost a fraction of yours. How do you balance or justify this cost? Are you a budget keeper or 'this is the one - I've got to have it' type of girl.

Either way, most of us have (had) a picture of our ideal dress that we are looking for, basic shape and colour, length of train, details, etc. When looking or hunting for your dress you should keep in mind that it can play double duty. Use it as one of the focal points for the wedding, where all details, starting with the decor, can reflect or compliment it. If you are planning on having an elaborate dress with all the bells and whistles, can you get away with using less than perfect linens at the reception? Probably not, ...unless you plan to sit on the table as the centrepiece.

So, again, how important is the dress when it comes to the bottom line of your wedding budget?

My advice is to look around, take your time. When you find the dress - yes 'the dress' - can you get everything there? Bridal salons are more apt to give you a better price if you get the maids dress there as well - but don't stop there, can you get the tuxes, veil, guest book, etc too? There is something to be said for one stop shopping, I'm thinking Walmart or Superstore now that I have a small one in tow - out of the car, get the stuff, in the car and home. Now I certainly don't always advise this but sometimes it's the right way to go.

Another way is to make note of the dress brand and style. Contact other salons to see if they have this dress - not all markups are the same. How much is gas and how far would you drive to get it? Can you get it online? Have you tried posting your dream dress on services like Kijiji or Craig's List asking about it. I know every bride is different but chances are that someone out there has a dress very similar to the one you are looking for and it could be yours at a lesser price point. You definitely need to be careful with this option as you want to make sure that you are still getting a great deal and the dress isn't ruined. Ask questions and see it in person.

Some used dresses can be altered famously! Such a case was here last fall when the local seconds store paired with the fashion college and put on a exquisite show of re-newed gowns.

Budget or no budget, rest assured that the dress of your day is out there. You just need to recognize it!

Cheers and happy planning!

Year end...

So, it's March and I am reflecting on the the whole year end thing. Yes I do realize New Year's was January 1st! As a planner I am just starting to calm down now to be able to catch up in all my email and it will stay this way for a few weeks and then it will be "Wedding Season" once again. We don't have a Christmas or summer break but we do usually get a few weeks in the spring to relax and enjoy the fam & friends. That said, if you have everything booked for your wedding and are not interested in the door prizes, fashion show etc, then this type of event may not be for you. Having recently participated in a wedding show there are a few things I have noticed and feel the need to pass along.

Things you can do to be prepared for a bridal show:
1. Dress appropriately:

Wear comfortable shoes as you will be standing A LOT!

Leave your jacket in the car - it will be hot and cumbersome to carry around. Besides you will need your hands free to sign up for all the free stuff and try all the goodies.

2. Contact information:

Having labels printed with your contact information (Bride & Groom Names, Wedding Date, Telephone #, email address) will save you time at each booth and avoid hand cramping. Bringing 20-30 of these is a good plan. Each exhibitor will want this information for draws, follow-up etc.

3. Know what you need/want:

Go to these vendors' booths first. People do book vendors at these type of shows so if you really want someone it's good to be prepared to put a deposit down or schedule an appointment.

Realize that the exhibitors are there to meet as many brides as they can. If you want to have some time "just for you", book an appointment. Most vendors would be more than happy to do so.

4. Door Prizes:

What are they? - Do you even want them?

What time are they? Do you need to be present to win? - If the prizes are all drawn at the end and you need to be present to win - are you prepared to be there all day?

Are they conditional? - Do you need to purchase anything to be a valid entry?

5. Make a day of it:

Bridal shows run for a good part of the day. It is a good idea to pack a bottle of water and a small snack if you are staying for the entire event.

Take your bridal party with you. This is a good time to spend together and get their input on things. They can carry things for you too! Usually there is a room set up for the groom so feel free to bring them along as well.

6. Fashion show:

If you want to see the fashion show, reserve a seat by getting there early - have a member of your party sit there to save it or toss a jacket across the seat.

If you don't care to see the fashion show, go back to get some 1-on-1 time with those exhibitors you liked - they won't be doing anything during this time and would be happy to talk with you.

Wedding Shows are a great way to get a lot of information at once. Some vendors will follow-up with the information you give them, others will not. You may even find services you didn't know existed.
Do you need to go to all the shows? Probably not but, if you have nothing else planned for the day you may learn something and have some fun while you're at it.

Oh, and since it's my blog.....
The wedding show of the season will be Sunday, February 15th, 2009 at the Fredericton Inn.

Cheers!

Colour use in Weddings

Don't be afraid of using colour!
